Conference Summary

The 6th International Conference of Chemical Engineering & Industrial Biotechnology (ICCEIB2022) was successfully conducted virtually on 15-16 August 2022. ICCEIB2022 was organised by the Faculty of Chemical and Process Engineering Technology, Universiti Malaysia Pahang, Malaysia and co-hosted with renowned institutions, Tianjin University (China) and Nguyen Tat Thanh University (Vietnam).

The theme for ICCEIB2022 was "Establishment of Sustainable Technological Solution for Industry and Society". This year, participants from all over the world, especially from Malaysia, Vietnam, China, Indonesia, Thailand, Iraq, and South Korea, were attracted to present their thoughts and findings on the future prospects of sustainable food, energy, and clean water supply. They got together via the Microsoft Teams platform. The number of submitted extended abstracts exceeded the original target, standing at 290, with more than 65% of them selected for the oral presentation in ICCEIB2022 under the topics of Food & Biotechnology, Energy & Catalysis, Water & Environmental Engineering, Process Control & Simulation, and Advanced in Chemical Engineering.

The programme commenced with a very warm welcome from the chairman of the conference, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Herma Dina Setiabudi, followed by virtually officiation ceremony by Vice-Chancellor of Universiti Malaysia Pahang Professor Dato' Ts. Dr. Yuserrie Bin Zainuddin. According to him, the conference theme reflects UMP’s dedication in conducting research and commercialization activities, especially in chemical engineering and industrial biotechnology related to the security, sustainability, and preservation of food, energy, and water resources. UMP has embarked on various collaborations with several industries and institutions, locally and internationally.

Four keynotes were invited to deliver keynote speeches relevant to the conference theme. The first keynote speech was given by Professor Dr. Xinbin Ma from Tianjin University, China, with the title “Catalytic upgrading of biomass-derived platform chemicals via hydrodeoxygenation/hydrogenolysis by metal catalyst”. The second keynote speech was delivered by Professor Dato’ Ir. Dr. Abdul Wahab Mohammad from Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia, Malaysia on “Desalination: Recent Advances and Challenges for Seawater Reverse Osmosis (SWRO) Membrane Technology”. Mr Khairul Salleh from Petronas Refinery and Petrochemical Corporation Sdn. Bhd. gave the third keynote speech with the title “Towards a Sustainable Future: The Energy Industry Perspective”. The fourth keynote speaker is Professor Dr. Fidel Todrá from Instituto de Agroquímica y Tecnología de Alimentos, Spain, with a speech titled “Technological developments for increased profitability of meat and fish by-products”.

The two-day conference comprised of 4 plenary sessions and 5 keynote speakers. Four parallel sessions were held according to the topics:

  • Food and Biotechnology
  • Energy and Catalysis
  • Water and Environmental Engineering
  • Process Control & Simulation
  • Advanced in Chemical Engineering

The closing speech was given by the chairman of the conference, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Herma Dina Setiabudi. She urges the participants to retain the networking and use the opportunity for future collaboration.
